Sunday Shoot 7/11/2010

Today our group got together at sam's house to shoot verse 2 which is my part of the song.  The location for my shoot was sam's bedroom. We started doing some test shots before we start the actual video shoot with custome and makeup. We used a normal digital camera for the test shoots.

 The five different aspect of Mise-en-scene are:

Space- The representation of space affects the reading of a film. Depth, proximity, size and proportions of the places and objects in a film can be manipulated through camera placement and lenses, lighting, set design, effectively determining mood or relationships between elements in the story world.

Costume- Costume simply refers to the clothes that characters wear. Using certain colors or designs, costumes in narrative cinema are used to signify characters or to make clear distinctions between characters.

Acting- There is enormous historical and cultural variation in performance styles in the cinema. Early melodramatic styles, clearly indebted to the 19th century theater, gave way in Western cinema to a relatively naturalistic style.

Lighting- Lighting is very important in video shoots or photo shoots. Lighting is the intensity, direction and quality of lighting have a major effect on the way an image or video is perceived. The light and shade can emphasise texture, shape, distance, mood, time of day or night, season, glamour; it affects the way colors are rendered, both in terms of hue and depth, and can focus attention on particular elements of the composition.

Set Design- An important element of "putting in the scene" is set design—the setting of a scene and the objects (props) there in. Set design can be used to amplify character emotion or the dominant mood of a film, or to establish aspects of the character.

Mise-en-scene is an espression used to describe the design aspects of a theatre or film production, which essentially means visual ''theme''.

Different Shot Types

EWS (Extreme Wide Shot)
The view is so far from the subject that he isn't even visible. Often used as an establishing shot.

 

 

VWS (Very Wide Shot)The subject is visible (barely), but the emphasis is still on placing him in his environment.

 

 

 

 

 

WS (Wide Shot)The subject takes up the full frame, or at least as much as comfortably possible.
AKA: long shot, full shot.

 

MS (Mid Shot)Shows some part of the subject in more detail while still

giving an impression of the whole subject.

 

 

 

 

MCU (Medium Close Up)Half way between a MS and a CU.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CU (Close Up)A certain feature or part of the subject takes up the whole frame.

Camera Angles

The term camera angle means slightly different things to different people but it always refers to the way a shot is composed. Some people use it to include all camera shot types, others use it to specifically mean the angle between the camera and the subject. We will concentrate on the literal interpretation of camera angles, that is, the angle of the camera relative to the subject.

Eye-Level

This is the most common view, being the real-world angle that we are all used to. It shows subjects as we would expect to see them in real life. It is a fairly neutral shot.

High Angle

A high angle shows the subject from above, i.e. the camera is angled down towards the subject. This has the effect of diminishing the subject, making them appear less powerful, less significant or even submissive.

Low Angle

This shows the subject from below, giving them the impression of being more powerful or dominant.

Bird's Eye

The scene is shown from directly above. This is a completely different and somewhat unnatural point of view which can be used for dramatic effect or for showing a different spatial perspective.
In drama it can be used to show the positions and motions of different characters and objects, enabling the viewer to see things the characters can't.
The bird's-eye view is also very useful in sports, documentaries, etc.

Slanted

Also known as a dutch tilt, this is where the camera is purposely tilted to one side so the horizon is on an angle. This creates an interesting and dramatic effect. Famous examples include Carol Reed's The Third Man, Orson Welles' Citizen Kane and the Batman series.
Dutch tilts are also popular in MTV-style video production, where unusual angles and lots of camera movement play a big part.

Song Choice

We have looked up different songs and their videos in order to get some ideas for our music video. We need to choose a song to create the video for.

Our first choice was Taio Cruz, Dynamtie. We chose this song because we thought the music video would come out really good after we have created it and we could be really creative with it.

However after few lessons we realised that this is not the right song for our group and it would be difficult to create because we had to use too many different locations. We decided to change our song choice.

We thought about using the song by Miley Cyrus called Party In The USA. We looked at the video and listened to it several times.

We came to a decision that this is not the right song for our group.

Our final song choice was Only Girl by Rihanna. We decided that this is the right choice because there was no video to this song. However the vide came out few days after we decided to use the song.

Mood Board

We have created our mood board. The images that we have included on the mood board is related to the music video that we will be creating. Below are some images of me doing some parts of the mood board.

Location Ideas

We spoke wbout the location that we were thinking about to do our video shoot.

First when we had to choose a song we chose Dynamite by Taio Cruz and we were going to use a couple of different location however when we thought about it we realised that that was going to be really difficult and time consuming so we decided to change the whole song.

When we thought about the Rihanna song (Only Girl) we thought about keeping it simple. Therefore we did most of the shoots in the Drama room that we booked in our school and we just had one scene which was my part and we thought about using samantha's bedroom for that part. We thought that the locations would work really well together because we would have the constant white background with the three of us and the bedroom scene would give it a different look and not make it boring.

We were going to use my room originally but we thought sams room is more suitable for the video and it has the right amount of space.

This was another bedroom that we could have used but we still thought that Sam's room would be better

 This image shows the drama room that we have to book for our second day of video shooting. We have to ask Mr. Collins for permission to use this room as there will be classes running in these classes.











 Again this image shows the drama room which we could use.

The big advantage of using the drama room is that we have full lighting included in the classes that we could use for our video shoot.

Costume Ideas

We looked at different video of Rihanna and she has a lot of styles in each video and she never looks the same ine her videos. We wanted to have stick with the gothic look and the dark makeup. We had a dress rehersal at Megi's house which worked out well and i will include some images below to show you what we decided to wera for the video shoot.

 This image shows Sohail with his costume. We decided thathe was going to bein black because he was going to be acting as the thief which was mentioned in the lyrics and we wanted to match the scene with that part of the lyrics.

Make up Ideas

For our music video we came up with couple of ideas for the makeup. I will show some pictures of the ideas that we have for the face makeup that we want to have in the music video for me, Sam and Megi.

For the eye makeup we decided to go light first but then we thought if we have smokey eyes it would show better on the camera and it would have a better effect. I will show you some examples below.

In the end we decided to go for the smokey eyes so the makeup could stand out in the video and show. For the bedroom scene I used blue eye shadow to match the dress that I was wearing therefore for the other scenes we decided to try our best to match the makeup eith the clothes that we were wearing. In the actual Rihanna video shes wearing light makeup however the chocking red hair stands out and draws attention to her.
